Policies :: Appendix A
Procedures for Handling Alleged Abuse of Computer Systems at Daniel Webster College:
- Upon receipt of a complaint alleging abuse of computing resources as defined in this document, the Director of Computer Services shall make a determination as to whether enough cause is warranted to instigate the normal judicial proceedings of the College.
- If there appears to be cause, the Director of Computer Services shall attempt to contact the alleged violator via a combination of telephone, e-mail and written correspondence informing the individual of the alleged offense. This correspondence shall request a personal meeting between the alleged offending party, the Director of Computer Services and any other parties deemed appropriate by the Director. Failure to respond within three working days to these attempts shall result in the automatic instigation of judicial proceedings.
- At the meeting identified in point 2 above, the Director shall determine whether the incident and circumstances involved should be referred to the appropriate judicial process. This determination shall be made upon input from all concerned parties, and should focus on the extent to which the individual demonstrates an understanding of the alleged violation, and the extent to which future violations are deemed likely.
- If this meeting provides results which indicate that the alleged violator understands the issues involved and does not seem likely to repeat the alleged offense, then the matter shall be closed. If the meeting does not provide such results, the Director shall refer these issues to the appropriate judicial proceeding for adjudication.
- Access to the system may be suspended at the discretion of the Director of Computer Services based upon the severity of the offense, whether the alleged violation reflects a repeat offense, endangerment of the system, or other cause which is perceived to directly harm the computing environment at Daniel Webster College. In any case where suspension has occurred, all procedures identified in this document are immediately instigated. If suspension of access has occurred, the person in charge of the judicial procedure may at any time request in writing that access be reinstated for the person involved and access shall be immediately reinstated.
- The judgment of the appropriate judicial process shall be final, and should include a recommendation as to the extent and timing of access to the system.
