Aviation Psychology & Medicine

Scope: Psychological factors play a role in determining pilot behavior and responses in the cockpit. Cognitive processes are involved in decision-making, perception, and attention. The purpose of this pathfinder is to serve as a guideline for student research. It is not intended as a comprehensive listing of all the resources available in the library on a specific topic, but as a selective sampling of the many types of materials available. Some of the topics covered in this pathfinder include circadian rhythms and pilot fatigue, stress, substance abuse, fear of flying, as well as other medical issues that affect pilot performance.

The following is a list of articles, arranged by topic, from Aviation, Space & Environmental Medicine, unless otherwise indicated.

INTERNET RESOURCES

Aviation & Aerospace Medicine

MEDLINE
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/

MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's bibliographic database containing citations and author abstracts from over 3800 biomedical journals. The subject headings assigned to MEDLINE citations are from a controlled vocabulary. For citations involving aviation medicine, the actual term is "aerospace medicine."

From the National Library of Medicine's home page, select Free MEDLINE. Two Web-based products, Internet Grateful Med and PubMed provide the access to the database citations. Both products have links to online help: PubMed's "Help" and Grateful Med's "New User's Survival guide."

In a basic PubMed search it is not required to link terms with the word "and" because the program automatically will do so. For example:
TOPIC SEARCH USING
jet lag aerospace medicine jet lag
pilot fatigue aerospace medicine pilot fatigue

NOTE: If you wish for the Baddour Library to request a title by interlibrary loan, please allow at least 2-3 weeks for delivery.
