Scope: Simone de Beauvoir was born in Paris in 1908. Her works entwined philosophical, political and moral issues. Her lifelong relationship with existentialist Jean Paul Sartre influenced her writings. Beauvoir defined this perspective as a “philosophy of ambiguity, a tension between living in the present and acting with an eye to one’s mortality.” (Ryan, Major 20th-Century Writers
