Scope: Paul Bowles was born in New York but spend most of his life traveling abroad. He was an existential writer in that his writings were pessimistic and dealt with a depersonalized world. Bowles gained popularity with the literary figures of the Beat Generation. His first novel and best known novel, The Sheltering Sky, has Morocco and his beloved North Africa as the setting.
