SCOPE: Elizabeth Barrett wrote in the earlier part of the 18th century where the male literary traditions were already established. It was very difficult for a woman to be taken seriously as a writer, yet Browning established herself as a great writer of sonnets or lengthy poems, and focused on the subject of love, which had been discussed primarily by male writers.
