Scope: John Cheever was a New
England author whose works embodied the world of the
“Northeast, upper middle class Protestant.” He was the
author of 180 short stories, 140 of which were published
in The New Yorker Magazine. The 1960’s, World War II,
and The Cold War were backdrops to his fiction. As a
writer for over fifty years, Cheever was the recipient
of many literary awards. One of the major themes in his
works is the conflict between good and evil within the
human heart. He believed the single most important
element to his stories was the characters actions within
“a moral chain of being.” (Gelfant, The Columbia
Companion to the Twentieth-Century American Short Story)
