Scope: William Golding, an English writer born in 1911, began his writing career at the age of twelve. His novel, The Lord of the Flies, made Golding an instant literary success. The novel eventually became a sort of cult classic among college students. It has been on recommended high school reading lists. Golding explores the themes of the defects of society and the defects of human nature. (Ryan, Major 20th-Century Writers)
