SCOPE: Post traumatic stress disorder is a prolonged reaction to a traumatic experience. (Nevid, Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World) Individuals in combat, rape survivors, victims of accidents as well as natural disorders may all experience extreme stress as a result. It is estimated that 8% of U.S. adults experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Symptoms of posttraumatic stress include nightmares, panic disorders, flashbacks, as well as the inability to interact socially with others.
