Scope: Peter Rubens was the great Flemish painter of the Baroque period of the 17th century. He studied the works of the older masters and his work demonstrated a style of grandeur and amplitude. He provided canvases for the ceiling of the Banqueting House in London. ( Piper, The Illustrated Dictionary of Art & Artists)
