Pathfinder: Sociology of Sport

Scope|Subject Headings|Overview Sources|Circulating Books|Periodicals, Journals & Trade Publications

SCOPE: Millions of people either view sports or participate in sports. Either way, sports have become a cultural phenomenon. Sports permeate culture to such an extent that everyday language incorporates game images and metaphors that shape and often distort the way people think about social reality. (Borgatta, Encyclopedia of Sociology) Such social problems as race and gender discrimination, aggression, violence, and drug abuse are brought to the forefront in the world of sports. Athletes are viewed as the ultimate role models for their avid fans. The purpose of this pathfinder is to serve as a guideline for the student in locating library materials on this topic. It is not intended as a comprehensive listing of all the resources available in the library, but as a selective sampling of the many types of materials available.
