The Writing Program
Students at Daniel Webster College
are encouraged to make choices for themselves and to take initiative in
their writing education.
This process starts in the freshman year when students place themselves
through online Directed Self-Placement into the first-year writing course
which suits their learning needs. Incoming first-year students should visit
the Writing Placement site off the New Student Orientation Blackboard by
July 1 in order to select their first writing course.
Writing occurs across the disciplines, and the first-year writing experience
provides foundational skills for all four years. Students are taught a mastery
of grammar and the writing process (EN 100); personal essay and argument-writing
strategies (EN 101); and intensive research skills (EN 102). Creativity
and critical inquiry are important components of all courses. Students must
successfully pass EN 102 Portfolio Review at the end of the first year sequence
of required courses.
Students are encouraged to take charge of their writing education by regularly
using the Writing Center. Each year, the Writing Center at Daniel Webster
College helps hundreds of students, staff, and faculty with personal and
academic writing. The tutoring hours are available
HERE.
Students enrolled in
Graduate and Continuing Studies
can obtain feedback on writing for continuing studies, Excel, MBA, and online
courses across the curriculum through the Daniel Webster College Online
Writing Center (OWL). In order to submit work for tutoring, students
need to request access to the OWL Blackboard site. Send an email to
Diane McCann Thomas, DWC Registrar, at registrar@dwc.edu.
In the subject line of the email, write REQUEST FOR ENROLLMENT IN ONLINE
WRITING LAB. In the body of the email, include your name and your
DWC email address. Note that the OWL is available solely to GCS students,
faculty, and staff.
Students with questions regarding writing requirements and self-placement
should contact Professor Alexandria Peary, Writing Director, at
peary@dwc.edu.
