SUCCESS STORIES
Aviation Management
Justin Montana '09

Justin Montana 21, from Plantsville, Connecticut will be graduating in ’09. Starting from square one, Justin has developed his skills as a controller and will continue to pursue this avenue until graduation. Presently, he is in his 3rd year at DWC.

During a time where the FAA is soon to be loosing thousands of controllers from retirement, Justin is in a perfect position to start a successful career. Day to day he works hard to meet the high standards set upon him by his instructors. He says, “My current success in moving through the ATC program is due in part to basic study habits along with continually practicing with fellow students, faculty, and the equipment provided.”

Weekly study groups with his classmates, lead by Jessica Carter, one of the peer tutoring staff, is part of Justin’s learning process. Each meeting they go over topics and subjects that they need to learn for application in the class lab. These labs consist of practice on either radar or tower simulators. Both of these simulators are top of the line and are revamped as upgrades and new demands for the programs arise. Two students are assigned to one of the highly accomplished instructors that educate them on technique along with the proper procedures as stated in the 7110.65 or the FAR/AIM, the “Bible” of all air traffic controllers. Justin says, “The talent amongst my instructors is amazing. They have been in the field for so many years and have been able to pass on their experience to my fellow students and me. I don’t think we could be getting a better education.”

Along with his ATC classes, Justin also attends a variety of different courses that may not be directly linked to his career choice but educate him on everyday professional needs. One of these courses is EN215 Professional Writing instructed by Professor Lucille DiCicco. Professor DiCicco strives to illustrate the importance of proficient written communication through motivating activities and applying the topics learned in class to her students’ majors. “She really makes the class fun.

Aside from the rigors of college life, Justin also spends time with off-campus activities. He enjoys skiing at the variety of the major ski resorts located close to Daniel Webster College. Just recently the college closed for a day to allow its students to enjoy the winter weather. The trip was to Loon Mountain, at discounted prices, and had transportation to and from the resort. Lunch was catered by the Aramark staff located at the college cafeteria.

The ATC field had become one of the most promising career fields surfacing in aviation. The demand for more controllers has increased exponentially from previous years and Justin Montana, along with his fellow students, have a great opportunity ahead of them. The job training, life skills, and learning goals set by Justin and his instructors ensure his success as a growing adult. On a final note by Justin, “I love the job field that I have chosen. At times it doesn’t have the décor as a job, more as something I just have fun and want to do. I can’t wait for graduation, so I can apply the skills learned from my classes, the support of fellow students, and my exceptional professors.”
