Social Science Minor

The Social Science minor is a dynamic course of study that provides students with the exciting opportunity to balance studies in aviation, engineering, business or computer science with history, political science, psychology, sociology and social science—subjects that “take the classroom into the world” by focusing on issues related to people and society.  Courses in the social sciences also strongly emphasize the skills all businesses look for in prospective employees—written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, computational skills and critical thinking skills.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCE MINOR

You are required to devote a minimum of 20 hours towards community service.

You can fulfill this requirement with a wide variety of service learning programs, community service projects or self-designated independent projects.  You’ll also maintain a portfolio which will contain documentation of all service projects and keep a journal in which you will describe and reflect upon all relevant activities.

Four courses are required for the minor.  In addition to SS301 Research Methods, three courses at the 200 level or higher (with at least 1 of the 3 at the 300 level or higher and with at least two disciplines represented) in the following disciplines:

  • History

  • Political Science

  • Psychology

  • Social Science

  • Sociology

Although not required of the Social Science minor, you are also strongly encouraged to take SS101 Introduction to the Social Sciences.  A grade of “C” or better is required in all courses.
