Homeland Security at Daniel Webster College

The Homeland Security degree is the hottest new program to hit the campus of Daniel Webster College! Building on the College’s strengths in Aviation, Computer Science, and the Social Sciences, the Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security grooms the next generation of tech-savvy students for rewarding careers protecting America.

Beyond emergency response and preparedness, this new major explores the dynamics of complex threats and how to best manage them based on understanding the motives and ambitions of those who promote terrorism and put others at risk.

Deadly terrorist attacks, organized cyber crimes and horrific natural and man-made catastrophes are just some of the adrenaline-pumping topics explored in this intriguing new major. Students also examine the psychology of a suicide bomber in the context of societal and extreme religious belief systems. To develop a core understanding of the motivations and mechanics of those who would attack America and how to best combat these threats, the degree offers concentrated studies in:

  • Domestic and International Terrorism
  • Threat Assessment
  • Principles of Conflict and Terror
  • Risk and Crisis Management
  • Infrastructure Protection
  • Disaster Response
  • Emergency and Recovery Planning

Three Degree Concentrations
Students may declare an Aviation Security, Computer Security, or a Self-Designed Concentration to pursue their personal and professional goals.

Aviation Security Concentration
The Aviation Security concentration introduces students to strategies for countering terrorist threats in aviation and transportation security. Students learn best practices for successful aviation emergency planning and response. They also study the laws, policies, and procedures that impact security issues.

Computer Security Concentration
The Computer Security concentration focuses on the detection and prevention of threats to information technology with an emphasis on how the Internet is used by cyber criminals and terrorist organizations. Students explore potential motives and outcomes from a cyber attack. They also learn how to manage and mitigate threats.

Student-Designed Concentration
The Student-Designed Concentration allows a student to work cooperatively with Daniel Webster College faculty to research and custom-design their own concentration within the established parameters for successful graduation.

Real World Experience Combined With Theory
Homeland Security students take part in interactive projects overseen by industry and faculty experts and take courses in the sociology of disasters, the ideology of conflict and terror, and crisis management. To receive professional work experience in their chosen field, every student participates in a Homeland Security Internship.

Daniel Webster College has partnered with the Center for Homeland Defense and Security of the Naval Postgraduate School. This partnership strengthens the development and delivery of the degree program by providing access to Homeland Security industry experts and specialized educational resources. The college is also a charter member of the Homeland Security and Defense Education Consortium – an industry association committed to ensuring programs in this field meet the highest academic standards.
