George I.
Alden Scholarship
In August 1999, the George I. Alden Trust awarded Daniel Webster
College a 3 for 1, $75,000 challenge grant to raise funds for the
college's endowment for scholarship. The Trust recognized that the
college needed to grow its endowment for scholarships and wanted to help
by offering this challenge grant. In November 2001, the College
successfully completed the challenge by raising $225,000 from trustees,
alumni, parents and friends, and the Trust immediately fulfilled its
commitment. The scholarship is need-based.
Mr. Alden was the first professor and mechanical engineering
department head at WPI in Worcester, Massachusetts. While achieving much
success in business, as an educator, and as a researcher in hydraulics,
Mr. Alden never forgot the importance of an education. Prior to his
death he established a trust to continue his support of education for
future generations.
Recipients are asked to write a letter of acknowledgement telling
