Boardman-Polando
Scholarship
The Boardman-Polando Scholarship was established in 2005 in honor of
Russell Boardman and John Polando by their spouses, family and friends.
Russell Boardman was a WWI fighter pilot and John was famous for a long
flight from Hyannis to Istanbul shortly after Lindbergh’s Paris flight.
Dorothy Polando has written a book called Wings Over Istanbul, telling
about those times.
The scholarship is to be awarded to a Daniel Webster College upper
class flight operations student (a junior or senior to-be) who following
two years of study has decided that he or she wants to be a pilot, at
least in the initial years of his/her career. The scholarship is to be
awarded annually and based upon merit and need.
The prospective recipients will be nominated and selected for
consideration by the faculty of the Aviation Division and the Director
of Financial Aid. Mrs. Dorothy Polando, John’s wife, will have the
opportunity to interview the final two or three candidates and indicate
her preference to the Director of Financial Aid.
