Eagles Drop Two At Johnson & Wales

East Providence, R.I. - The Johnson & Wales University baseball team posted
a pair of victories against Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference double header at Pierce Field on Sunday afternoon. Johnson &
Wales posted a 10-0 victory in the opener and finished the sweep with a 19-3
win in the nightcap.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the
opener on RBI singles by seniors Mike MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Mike
Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.). The Wildcats added four more in the bottom of the
second, including an RBI double by Jackson.
The squad capped off the scoring for the afternoon with three runs in the
bottom of the fifth en route to the 10-0 victory. Senior Erik Hufnagel
(Sykesville, Md.) picked up the win for JWU, pitching five scoreless innings
with nine strikeouts. Jackson was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while
Ziman was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the victory for the Wildcats.
Sophomore Charles Manning (Riverside, R.I.) was 2-for-3 in the loss for
Daniel Webster.
In the nightcap, JWU took an early 8-0 lead after the first three innings.
Daniel Webster responded in the top of the fourth when they tallied three
runs, including a solo home run by freshman Trevor Duggleby (Nashua, N.H.)
to cut the lead to 8-3.
The Wildcats broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the
fourth, which included a grand slam home run by Jackson, giving the team the
15-3 lead. JWU then cruised to the 19-3 victory. Jackson was 3-for-4 with a
run and five RBI while Newsome was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.
Sophomore Joe Welsh (Litchfield, N.H.) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an
RBI in the setback for Daniel Webster. Junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence,
R.I.) notched the victory on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits with
five strikeouts in five innings.
The Wildcats are now 21-10 for the season, 11-1 in the GNAC while Daniel
Webster falls to 4-19 for the season, 2-10 in league play.
