Eagles Drop Two, History is Made in Orlando
The Daniel Webster College baseball team dropped two at the Disney Wide
World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. As part of its season opening
Spring trip Sunday. The Eagles fell to the University of Rochester and Saint
Joseph’s, Maine by identical 19-3 scores.
Nick Michaud (Windsor Locks, Conn.) took the loss (0-1) in the opener
allowing five runs on five hits, while newcomer Mike Sweeney (Foxboro,
Mass.) drove in two runs.
In the nightcap, history was made for the Eagles and New England baseball as
freshman pitcher Christal Fitzgerald (Sydney, Australia) tossed 2 1/3
innings of middle relief against Saint Joseph’s. Fitzgerald, just the fourth
female student-athlete to play in a men’s collegiate baseball game, allowed
one hit over two full innings before being touched four three earned run on
four hits and walking one in the third. Fitzgerald is also the first
international woman to play in a collegiate game.
Starter Jared Galm (Kingston,N.Y.) took the loss (0-1), allowing nine runs
on seven hits over four innings.
Michael Adams (Frankfort, Maine) and Andrew Storck (Leesburg, Ohio) led the
Eagles (0-4) with two hits each, while Chuck Manning (Riverside, R.I.) added
one hit.
The Eagles, who dropped their season opening doubleheader on Saturday to
Farmingdale State, 6-0 and 8-3, are off until Tuesday when they face Saint
Joseph’s, Maine again at 7:00 p.m.
