Johnson & Wales Sweeps Eagles in GNAC Opener
(Nashua) – Justin Maldonado went 3-for-3 knocking in three runs and Greg
Byron tossed a two-hit shutout over seven innings to give Johnson & Wales a
5-0 victory over host Daniel Webster and complete a doubleheader GNAC sweep
Sunday at Harvey Woods Field.
Shaun Hanson (Durham, N.H.) and Dan Haynes (Downsville, N.Y.) had hits for
the Eagles (2-12, 0-2 GNAC), while Casey Allan (S. Berwick, Maine) took the
loss (0-3), allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits over seven innings,
striking out four and walking two.
Byron struck out eight and walked just one in the seven inning game. His
outing came on the heels of a masterful performance by teammate Erik
Hufnagel, who tossed a one hitter over five innings striking out 13 in a
13-2 game one victory.
In the opener, Hufnagel struck out five of the first six and 13 of the total
17 batters he faced, striking out the side in the first, fourth and fifth
innings.
Hurley and Mike Ziman paced the Wildcat offense, knocking in two runs each.
The Wildcats took control scoring twice in each of the first three innings
and broke the game open with seven in the top of the sixth keyed by three
errors and a two run single from Ziman.
Kevin Murphy (New Paltz, N.Y.) added a run scoring double for the Eagles.
Hanson (0-3) took the loss.
DWC closes out its six-game home stand with a 3:00 p.m. match up with New
England College Tuesday. Johnson & Wales hosts Coast Guard Tuesday at 5:30
