WNEC Shuts Out Eagles

Springfield, Mass. - The Daniel Webster baseball team dropped both ends of a GNAC doubleheader to host Western New England, 5-0 and 5-0 Wednesday afternoon.

In the opener, Jason Pizzoferrato and Eric Blanchard combined for 12 strikeouts for the Golden Bears (16-8, 8-2 GNAC). Pizzoferrato allowed both hits, fanned nine, and didn’t allow a walk in five innings in gaining his first win of the season. Senior first baseman Tom Horgan had a RBI single in a three-run fifth.

Kevin Murphy (New Paltz, NY) had a double for the Eagles (4-19, 1-9 GNAC).

In the nightcap, Mike Richardson (2-1) tossed a six-hitter for with six strikeouts and a walk. Richardson got a strikeout for the final out with the bases loaded in the seventh to preserve his first shutout of the season. Ryan Kravontka went 2-for-4 with a single and leadoff homer in the fifth, while Josh Jacobs was 2-for-3 with a single, double and two runs. Daniel Webster shortstop Dave Shemella (Stone Ridge, NY) had pair of singles.
