Michaud's 5 RBI Help Eagles Gain Split With Rivier
Nashua, N.H. - Nick Michaud (Windsor Locks, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a
two-run double in the first and a three-run double in the second and Shaun
Hanson (Durham, N.H.) tossed a complete game victory as Daniel Webster
rebounded for an 8-5 victory to earn a split of a GNAC doubleheader with crosstown rival Rivier Sunday at Harvey Woods Field.
The Eagles (6-22, 2-12 GNAC) bounced back after a game one 5-3 Rivier
victory.
In the nightcap, the Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the first keyed by Michaud’s
first double and an RBI single from Kevin Murphy (New Paltz, N.Y.).
Rivier (10-11, 8-6 GNAC) answered with five in the top of the second on four
hits including two run singles from Ryan O’Connor (Medford, Mass.) and Corey
Hayes (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and an RBI double from Bobby Gibbon
(Littleton, Mass.). Both Hayes and Gibbon finished with two hits each.
But the Eagles answered right back in the bottom of the frame plating four
more runs on two hits. Michaud cleared the bases with a two-out double, and
scored on a follow-up Murphy single.
Yet after the wild first two innings, neither team manufactured another run.
Hanson settled down to allow just two hits over the final five innings,
finishing with a seven hitter, striking out five and walking three.
Roger LaRochelle (Pelham, N.H.) took the loss in relief of starter Clint
Whelan (Smithtown, N.Y.). Scott Fournier (Pepperell, Mass.) finished the
final four innings, allowing just one hit, striking out one and walking one.
In the opener, Larochelle just missed hitting for the cycle with a triple,
double and single to pace the 5-3 Raider win. Franco Piscano (Lynnfield,
Mass.), Hayes and Joe Gargan (Hudson. N.H.) added two hits each.
DWC forged ahead 1-0 in the first in a Michaud RBI single and Rivier pulled
ahead 2-1 in the second on an error and LaRochelle’s RBI triple.
A Kevin Moyer (Georgetown, Mass.) single plated Mike Crawford (Yarmouth,
Maine) in the top of the third for a 3-1 game and Casey Allan (S., Berwick,
Maine) answered with a run-scoring double in the third.
Rivier pushed two across in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from
Piscano, who later scored on an error.
But things got tense when DWC loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of
the seventh. After Adams pushed home Haynes with a single to make it 5-3,
LaRochelle entered in replace of starter Nick Jackson (Litchfield, N.H.),
and got the final two outs to preserve the victory.
Jackson earned the win, allowing three earned runs on just three hits,
striking out seven but walking six.
Michaud took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on 13 hits,
striking out two and walking three.
