2007 Awards Night Honorees inlcude (L-R): Erin Moseley, Kevin Horton, Alexandra Sobin and Craig Van Tuyl.

Nashua, N.H. -- Four student-athletes were honored for their academic as well as their athletic excellence, headlining the annual Daniel Webster College (DWC) Eagle Athletics Awards Night Thursday, May 3rd at the Collings Auditorium of the Eaton-Richmond Center on the College campus.

Sophomore cross country runner Kevin Horton of Kingston, Mass. and sophomore softball infielder Alexandra Sobin of Little York, N.J. were named the recipients of the Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year award, while junior men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse standout Craig Van Tuyl of Buffalo, N.Y. and junior three-sport star Erin Moseley of Sterling, Mass. were named recipients of the Male and Female Athlete of the Year award.

Four longtime supporters of Eagle athletics were also honored with the inaugural “Eagle Athletics Merit Award.” Honorees included DWC Professors Donald Fagan (posthumously) and Professor Roger Baccieri, College Registrar Dr. Jean Anderson, and former College Trustee Mr. Fred Roedel.

The evening also included the announcements of all varsity team awards including most valuable players, most improved players, coaches’ awards, top rookies and other specialty awards.

Horton, an Aviation Flight Operations major is a member of the College’s prestigious President’s List, which recognizes all students that have held a 3.5 grade point average or higher for at least three consecutive semesters. Horton enjoyed the most prolific and successful cross country season in program history this past Fall. A regular top team finisher, he earned First Team All Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) honors with an eighth place finish at the conference championships, and his time qualified him for the NCAA regional championships, making him the first Eagle harrier to ever do so.

Sobin, an Aeronautical Engineering major, is also a member of the prestigious President’s List and was a regular starter at infield and is also considered one the Eagle Athletic department’s top ambassadors for the program both on campus and off.

Van Tuyl enjoyed outstanding seasons both in the fall and spring. On the soccer field as goalkeeper, he served as sole captain, started 14 of 16 games, accumulated more than 1,000 minutes of playing time, and led the GNAC both in total saves and saves per game. On the lacrosse field, he anchored a team defense that held opponents to five goals or less five times, and posted the second best team defense in the North Atlantic Conference. He was named a Second Team All Conference selection for his efforts.

Moseley, a rare three-sport athlete and even rarer three-sport captain, excelled in all three endeavors, earning Second Team All Conference accolades on the volleyball court as a middle hitter, Third Team accolades on the basketball court as a center, and was a finalist for All Conference accolades on the softball diamond as a pitcher. Along the way, she set new program offensive records in volleyball for kills, blocks and serving aces. She stands just a handful of points from 1,000 on the basketball court, where she also is among the all time leaders in rebounding, blocks and free throw shooting. On the softball diamond, she finished second in team batting average and runs batted in, was tops in slugging percentage, and was among the top 10 in the GNAC in strikeout ratio per seven innings.

Merit Award Winners

Mr. Fagan
was honored posthumously for his longtime support and service in advancing the cause of Eagle athletics. An icon of the College community, Mr. Fagan taught for 31 years covering economics, investment, and personal finance classes, including what was uniquely described as "Faganomics." A former "Teacher of Excellence" award winner and Chairman of the Department of Business, he served on numerous College committees and was the preeminent Eagle fan, making it a practice to attend all team sporting events. Regardless of how the team ranked in its division, he believed faculty and administration's attendance at sporting events sent a positive message to the team and students and it was very important for them to attend.

Mr. Roedel, a former trustee of the College, is the Managing Member of Roedel Companies, LLC, which offers a wide range of hotel development services to real estate investors who currently own hotels or are interested in developing their own hotel. In his role, Mr. Roedel oversees the annual and long-term objectives of the company. He is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Chalet Susse International, Inc., the hotel company that owned, constructed, operated, and franchised Susse Chalet and Grand Chalet hotels throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states from 1968 through 2000. Mr. Roedel was instrumental in the construction of Harvey Woods Field, home to the Eagles baseball team and continues to be a key supporter of Eagle athletics.

Mr. Roger Baccieri, often described as the prototypical professor, academic chair and supporter of Eagle athletics, has been the guiding force in the College’s Aviation Air Traffic Control program since coming to DWC in the early 1990’s. A retired Colonel and former pilot in the United States Air Force, Mr. Baccieiri has served the College in numerous capacities, from Aviation Division Chair, to member of the Academic Standards Committee, to a fixture at home athletics contests be they on a field, court or ice rink. While thousands of aviators across the country owe their knowledge to Mr. Baccieri, thousands more owe their thanks for his support of Eagle athletics through the years.

Dr. Jean Anderson has served the College as Registrar since 2000 and has been a consistent and true supporter of Eagle athletics. The athletics arena has always been a natural element for Dr. Anderson, who was a former standout athlete as an active runner and biker. But her true passion has always been basketball, where she moved on from her playing days to serve in coaching roles at Whitworth and later Michigan State, before coming east. During her time at the College, Dr. Anderson has offered countless hours assisting with and chairing various committees addressing college retention, graduation, opening day, and the implementation of new technologies, while always being there to root on the Eagles, win or loss.

Sportsmanship Award

Two student-athletes were honored as recipients of the Eagle Athletics Sportsmanship Award for outstanding service towards the advancement of Eagle athletics.

Freshman cross country runner and softball infielder Joanna Brinkerhoff of Ghent, N.Y. was named as female recipient of the award, while Chris Suffoletto of Hamburg, N.Y., a graduate student and member of the Eagles ACHA men’s ice hockey program was the male recipient.

Brinkerhoff was the top overall women’s performer throughout the cross country season, placing 24th an the annual GNAC championships on October 28th, 2006. Brinkerhoff was also a 20-game starter at shortstop during the Eagles’ softball season.

Suffoletto appeared in 20 games for the Eagles, contributing six assists as a defenseman and was an important component to the team’s run to their first New England Collegiate Hockey Association Conference championship in late February.
