Cadets's Hot Second Half Helps Stop Eagles

Northfield, Vt. - Cody Hatt came off the bench to score a game-high 26 points, and the Cadets shot a red-hot 64.0 percent from the field in the second half as Norwich pulled away from visiting Daniel Webster for an 86-72 victory in a GNAC men’s basketball contest Monday night at Andrews Hall.

Hatt tallied 17 of his 26 points in the first half as Norwich (8-6, 4-4 GNAC) rallied from an early nine-point deficit. Hatt shot 9-of-13 from the field for the game, including 6-of-9 from three-point range.

Mike Filipek tossed in 16 points, and Derrick Montiero added 14 points for the Cadets, who have won four of their last five games since beginning league play 0-3. Despite struggling from the field, NU’s leading scorer Jerrold Williams still contributed nine points and a team-high eight rebounds to go along with a game-high five assists.

As a team, NU was successful on 16-of-25 second half field goal attempts. The Cadets shot 50.9 percent for the game, while holding Daniel Webster to 36.2 percent.

Norwich utilized a 23-11 run during a 10-minute stretch in the second half to turn a 48-43 lead at the 16:02 mark into a 71-54 advantage with 6:29 left in the game. Hatt fueled the surge as the senior connected on three three-pointers.

Daniel Webster (3-10, 1-7 GNAC) was unable to get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Tim Jackson paced the Eagles with 14 points. Chris Hanson added 11 points and Brian Inge chipped in 10 points.

Daniel Webster opened the game by outscoring Norwich, 10-1. Hanson nailed three three-pointers during the game-opening spurt as the Eagles grabbed a nine-point lead at the 15:58 mark. The Cadets responded with a 16-6 burst over the next five minutes to take their first lead of the game at 17-16 with 11:14 to play in the first half.

The game went back and forth over the next several minutes with a total of three ties and eight lead changes during the opening frame. The third and final tie of the half came at 27-27 with 6:05 showing on the first half clock. The Cadets outscored the Eagles 12-7 over the final six minutes to take a 39-34 lead into the intermission.

Hatt sparked the Norwich offense off the bench with 17 points. The senior guard was locked in, connecting on 6-of-9 field goals, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. The Cadets shot 40.6 percent from the field in the first half, while the Eagles shot just 34.4 percent from the floor.
