Eagles Tipped By Johnson & Wales

Providence, R.I. -- Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) notched 28 points and added eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team to an 88-78 victory against Daniel Webster in Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside RAC on Saturday afternoon.

JWU sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) tallied 25 points and three rebounds while senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) added 14 points and four rebounds for the Wildcats in the victory.

Daniel Webster freshman Ahmad Hemingway (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a team-high 25 points and added five assists and three steals. Freshman Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) tallied 21 points on seven three pointers and added seven rebounds in the setback for the Eagles.

The two teams traded baskets during the early stages of the first half with the score tied 18-18 with 10:42 left on the clock. Daniel Webster then used a 6-0 run, capped by a three pointer by Hanson to take a 24-18 advantage with 8:38 left on the clock. The Wildcats responded, however and used a 10-2 run to take a 28-26 lead on a layup by Kerr with 3:06 left in the first half. The Wildcats took the 35-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The game was tied 40-40 just three minutes into the second half before a 9-2 run by the Wildcats put the team up 49-42 with 14:51 remaining in the contest. JWU took its first double digit lead when a three pointer by Kerr gave them a 66-56 advantage with 8:50 left. The Wildcats would then take the 88-78 victory.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 11-5 overall and 8-2 in the GNAC while Daniel Webster falls to 3-11, 1-8 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, January 29th when they travel to Lasell for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up that begins at 7:00 p.m.
