McKie's Layup, Eagles Defense Tips Albertus In Closing Seconds
Nashua –
Ray McKie’s (St. Albans, NY) layup with 2.6 seconds remaining on the clock
propelled the Daniel Webster men’s basketball team past visiting Albertus
Magnus in a GNAC matchup Saturday afternoon.
McKie’s game winner capped a frenetic finish to a hotly contested meeting
that was in doubt until the final seconds. The win halted the Eagles’
11-game skid and avenged an earlier season loss to the Falcons.
Adam Landry (Vernon, Conn.) paced DWC (4-13, 2-10 GNAC) with 13 points
including three three pointers, while A.J. Hemingway (Staten Island, NY)
added 12 points and Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) added 11 with three treys.
Joel Prince (Woodbridge, Va.) added eight points and a game best 15 rebounds
including an important eight on the offensive boards.
Bobby Leonzo (East Haven, Conn.) sparkled for the Falcons (1-17, 1-11 GNAC)
with a game high 22 points including knocking down 8 of 9 from the field and
was a perfect 5 for 5 from three-point land. Leonzo added a team best 12
boards with six on the offensive glass.
Adam Hovan (Ansonia, Conn.) added 15 points and 11 boards for the Falcons.
Mike Barber (West Haven, Conn.) chipped in with eight.
Leonzo sizzled in the first half, going 6 of 6 from the field with four
treys for 16 points and the Falcons held a 42-40 lead at the break after the
Eagles pulled back from a nine-point deficit over the final seven minutes.
The Falcons kept the pressure on over the first eight and half minutes of
the second, holding as much as a 13-point lead after another Leonzo three
with 15:16 to go.
Trailing 65-54 with 11:39 to play, the Eagles began to slowly climb back in
as the defense clamped down - in fact the Eagles did not actually allow a
Falcon field goal the rest of the way.
A Prince layup along with free throws from Tim Jackson (W. Henrietta, NY)
and Prince made it a five-point game and Landry buried an important three
with 8:30 left to make it 65-62.
Two freebies from Hovan put the Falcon lead at six (68-62) with 6:53 to go.
But Hemingway followed with a jumper, Hanson added a layup and a McKie layup
tied it at 68 with 5:35 left.
The Falcons rebuilt the lead to four at the line, but Hemingway knocked down
a layup with 3:09 left and added two more at the line with 45 second left
setting up McKie’s clock beater.
The Eagles travel to Mount Ida for a Monday GNAC meeting at 6:00 p.m.
Albertus hosts Lasell Monday at 7:30 p.m.
