Darmouth Wins, But A Memorable Division I Foray For Eagles

Hanover, N.H. -- Junior guard DeVon Mosley poured in 12 of his game-high 18 points in the second half and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds as Dartmouth showed no signs of exam-break rust in an 88-52 win over Division III Daniel Webster Saturday night.

Daniel Webster (3-4), playing its first official game ever against a Division I opponent (the Eagles lost to The Citadel last month in a game that counted for The Citadel but was an exhibition for the Eagles) got 17 points from Brian Inge and nine from A.J. Hemingway. Dartmouth limited the visitors to 31.9 percent shooting.

Mosley knocked down 4-of-6 shots from beyond the arc to help the Big Green (5-4) win for the fourth time in its last five games and defeat the Nashua, N.H., school in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

With the win Dartmouth is off to its best start since the 2001-02 team opened with the same nine-game record.

Inge knocked down 7 of 19 from the field with two three pointers, while Tim Jackson (3 steals), Joe Prince (3-4 from the floor) and Ray McKie (five caroms) added six points each on the evening.

As has been the case throughout much of the season, the Eagles hurt their cause with cool first half shooting, only to rebound with much hotter hands in the second half. After putting down just 8 of 33 in the opening frame, DWC improved by more than 15% in the second (14-36).

But the much bigger inside presence for the Big Green was a major factor. Dartmouth finished with a 45-34 advantage on the glass (16 on the offensive rim), and stymied much of the Eagle's inside penetration, also resulting in 12 total blocks including eight in the opening frame.

The game was remarkably clean. The teams combined for just 18 fouls - including what may be a new program record of just five for DWC. As a result, the Eagles went to the line just eight times (5-8), while the Big Green took only six freebies (4-6). Further, the lack of whistles helped lead to a game that was completed in just over 90 minutes (including half time and time outs).

The teams were tied 4-4 after an Inge jumper 2:08 in, and he added a freebie made it 6-5 with 17:04 to go in the first. But Dartmouth rattled off the next 17 points including a trey from Marlon Sanders and took advantage of four Eagle turnovers and three misfires to create a 23-5 advantage and the Eagles never pulled closer.

Big Green junior forward Alex Barnett had 10 points and six assists while Adam Powers had 12 points in 11 active minutes. Johnathan Ball added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Dartmouth never trailed, jumping out to a 44-19 halftime lead and added to it with 57.1 percent shooting from the field in the second half. Ten players scored for Dartmouth, which got 26 points off its bench.

Marlon Sanders and Michael Giovacchini each chipped in eight points for the Big Green, which travels to Quinnipiac Wednesday.

DWC meanwhile, is off until January 8th when it returns to host Emmanuel in a GNAC matchup at 7:00 p.m.
