McKie, Bryant Sink SVC at Buzzer, 93-92

Box Score

Jamie Bryant (Hartford, Conn.) took an inbounds pass the length of the court with six seconds to play, split the defense and then dished to an open Ray McKie (Bronx, N.Y.) who coolly buried a 15 foot jumper from just inside the arch as time expired giving Daniel Webster a heart-stopping 93-92 victory over visiting Southern Vermont Saturday.

The McKie gamer winner was the only lead of the game for an Eagles squad that appeared all but buried, trailing by 17 with 13:17 to play.

McKie’s game winner came after Nick Harrington (Brooklyn. N.Y.) almost single handedly won the game for SVC with six seconds left. Harrington pulled down the rebound off teammate Kenny Suggs’ miss, drew a foul and knocked down one of two free throws.

The win snapped a five game skid as DWC improved to 5-12. The loss was the fourth straight for the Mountaineers (6-11).

Bryant finished with a team best 30 points on 11 of 19 shooting from the field, went 8 of 10 from the line and added six rebounds. McKie followed with 27 points, going 13 of 18 from the field. Toby Jiminez (Worcester, Mass.) added 15 points (6-10 fg), five steals and three assists.

Harrington led Southern Vermont with a game high and double double of 31 points including a remarkable 12 of 14 from the field and pulled down 16 boards, while adding five assists and three steals.

Joe Karnik (Castleton, N.Y.) added 19, Chris Matte (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) notched 17 and Emory Wheeler (Virginia Beach, Va.) chipped in with 13 for the Mountaineers.

Both teams sizzled from the field throughout the game. SVC shot 51% in both the first and second half, but the Eagles saved their best for last. After hitting for a solid 48% in the first half, DWC shot an unconscious 63% in the second (22-35).

Trailing 48-41 at the half, the Eagles saw SVC extend the lead to 70-53 after a Suggs layup with 13:17 left. But Bryant and McKie went to work knocking down six points each and, after Tyler Smith nailed a trey with 9:36 left, the lead was worked down to 74-68.

After some back and forth play and down by seven at 88-81 with 3:29 left, the Eagles whittled the lead down to one (88-87) with 1:30 to go keyed by a huge Adam Greeno steal and feed to Jimenez for a layup.

Harrington followed with a three point play with 1:22 left, but McKie answered with a jumper 10 seconds later. After a Harrington walk, Warren Wiggins found McKie under the basket for another layup and a 91-91 game with 40 seconds left, setting up the final second heroics.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they host Norwich in a GNAC contest at 6:00 p.m. Southern Vermont hosts Albertus Magnus Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
