Castleton Spoils Eagles Opener With
Fourth Quarter Rally
Nashua – Tied at three after three periods of play, the Castleton men’s
lacrosse team pulled away with eight fourth quarter scores to post an 11-3
victory over host Daniel Webster in a North Atlantic Conference matchup
Saturday in a game played at Southern New Hampshire University.
Devon Wood (Woodstock, Vt.) and Jake Rick (Rochester, N.Y.) paced the
Spartans (2-2, 2-0 NAC) with two goals and an assist each, while Brett
Quillia (Hartford, Vt.) registered a game high five assists, spoiling the
season opener for the Eagles (0-1, 0-1 NAC).
Michael Martinez (Manchester, Conn.), Craig MacDerment (Glenville, N.Y.),
Koery Counos (St. Albans, Vt.), Phil Barry (Randolph, Vt.), Daniel Luzzi
(Oakland, N.J.), Josh Davis (Franklin, Mass.), and Robert Hass (Farmington,
Conn.) all added single scores to the balanced Castleton attack.
Ryan Manning (Newport, N.H.), Parker Condit (Newton, N.J.) and Mike Jordan
(Wakefield, Mass.) each scored once for the Eagles.
Castleton built a 3-0 lead over the opening quarter on scores from Davis,
Wood and MacDerment, before the Eagles slowly pulled even.
Manning’s first of the season, off a Zach Horchar (Balto, Md.) feed with six
seconds to play in the first cut the game to 3-1 and the score remained 3-1
into the half.
DWC would tie it in the third as Condit notched an unassisted tally with
9:52 remaining and Jordan would beat the clock to tie it with nine seconds
left sending the game tied into the fourth.
But the Spartans took control with three goals in the first four minutes of
the fourth. Wood notched his second of the day 21 seconds into the frame to
grab the lead for good, while Barry and Rick scored 31 seconds apart at
11:52 and 11:21 for a 6-3 lead.
Chris Leyland (New Hope, Penn.) made six saves for the Eagles, while Michael
Mamunes (Manchester, Conn.) stopped three Eagle shots for Castleton.
Daniel Webster is off until Thursday when they travel to Green Mountain.
Castleton hosts New England College Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
