Abrahamson, Eagles Tip Mariners In OT, 8-7
(Castine, Maine) – The Eagles men’s lacrosse squad has maintained its hold
on first place in the North Atlantic Conference for another day, but just
barely. Sophomore attack Brian Abrahamson (Dedham, Mass.) converted a Colby
Field (Hollis, N.H.) pass with 3:09 left to play in sudden death overtime
giving Daniel Webster a nail biting 8-7 victory over Maine Maritime
Wednesday afternoon at Ritchie Field. The win kept the Eagles undefeated and
in first place in NAC play.
The win was the third straight for the Eagles, who at 3-2 overall, continued
their best conference start in history moving to 3-0 and maintaining a slim
lead for sole possession of first place over idle Castleton (2-0 NAC / 3-2).
The Eagles won despite being heavily outdone by the pesky Mariners in shots (41-19), groundballs
(51-33) and face offs (11-5).
Abrahamson finished with a game high four points with three goals and an
assist, while reigning NAC Rookie of the Week Adam McKellar (Biddeford,
Maine) sparkled again in net, finishing with 21 saves despite difficult
weather conditions.
Reigning NAC Player of the Week Brandon Bell (Loudon, N.H.) and fellow
forward Ryan Manning (Newport, N.H.) chipped in with two goals each.
Brandon Hamilton and Garret Lake led the Mariners (2-3, 1-2 NAC) with two
goals each, while Nate Bolduc added a goal and two assists. Patrick Jones
finished with nine saves.
The Eagles led 2-0 after one period and 3-2 at the half. The Mariners
rallied to take their first lead at 4-3 on Lake’s second of the day early in
the third quarter, but Manning tied it on an extra man score with 10:31 to
go in the frame. Abrahamson regained the lead just 32 seconds later.
Tied at five with 2:14 to go in the third after Bolduc’s score, the Eagles
regained the lead with a Bell unassisted tally with 37 ticks left and
Manning’s second of the game made it 7-5 with 13:50 to play.
But the Mariners wouldn’t fold as Adam Erickson cut the lead to 7-6 with
10:44 left in regulation and Maine Maritime forced overtime when Adam
Erickson beat McKellar with just 47 seconds to play.
DWC is off until Saturday when they look for their fourth straight win as
they host NAC rival Becker at 1:00 p.m.
