Spartans Hold Off Eagles, 12-5

(Nashua) – In a meeting of NAC unbeatens, Castleton broke open a close game at the half with three goals in the third and fourth quarters respectively, pinning a 12-5 loss on Daniel Webster at DWC Field Wednesday.

The win allowed the Spartans (4-3, 3-0 NAC) to maintain a share of first place in the league with Mount Ida, while the Eagles fell a half game off the pace (4-3, 3-1 NAC) and saw a four-game win streak halted.

The Spartans, who outshot the Eagles 23-11, were paced by three goals from Robbie Scanlon, while Jake Rick added two goals and set up five others.

Brain Abrahamson (Dedham, Mass.) paced DWC (4-3, 3-1 NAC) with two goals, while Brandon Bell (Loudon, N.H.) dished out three assists.

In a rare occurrence, Eagle goalkeeper Adam McKellar (Biddeford, Maine), who finished with 23 saves, contributed offensively, setting up DW’s opening score. McKellar sent a clear nearly 50 yards downfield to a streaking Andrew Smith (Lancaster, N.Y.), who cut behind the defense and nailed a hard angle shot past Michael Mamunes 4:56 into the contest for a 1-0 Eagle lead.

But the Spartans would score the next three in a span of 2:07 including two from Scanlon to take a 3-1 edge. Abrahamson’s first of the day with 1:20 to go in the first sliced the lead to 3-2.

The teams traded two scores each with Cullen Larkin and Colby Field scoring for DWC in the quarter, before Stephen Gerding put Castleton up with 5:10 to go for the 6-4 lead at the break.

Castleton began to wear the Eagles down in the third, outshooting the hosts 21-4 (though just 7-6 in shots on target). Adam Rosati, Matt VanDerKar and Korey Counos all connected in the frame, while the Eagles were held scoreless, falling behind 9-4.

Rick notched both his scores in the fourth, Rosati notched his second, and Abrahamson closed the scoring with 2:49 to play.

The Eagles are now off until Saturday when they host Thomas in a 1:00 p.m. NAC matchup.
