Dudley, Mass. – The Nichols College men’s soccer team came back from a
two-goal deficit to defeat Daniel Webster College, 3-2, Thursday afternoon
at Vendetti Field. Sophomore Mark Capitanio (Mansfield, Mass.) scored the
game-winning goal with just over one minute left in the game after senior
Aaron Kelly (Dover Plains, N.Y.) tied it up on a penalty kick less than
three minutes earlier.
Capitanio scored his second game-winner of the season on a free kick from 32
yards out, placing the ball in the lower right corner past the Eagles’ wall
of defenders. A collision in the 18-yard box set up Kelly’s penalty kick
which sailed into the lower left corner to tie the game in the 86th minute.
Sophomore Ryan Wytrych (Feeding Hills, Mass.) put Nichols on the board with
a header off a cross by Giulian Correia (Lakeville, Mass.) at in the 71st
minute.
The Eagles led by one at the half, when Alex Jackson (Kent, Ohio) picked up
a crossed ball that deflected off a Nichols defender right to his feet, and
slipped it past Nichols netminder Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.)
in the 31st minute.
Daniel Webster’s lead grew to 2-0 early in the second half on a goal by
freshman Nicholas Klesh (Bedford, N.H.), who retrieved a deflected ball,
then scored with a shot to the upper right corner.
Hamilton finished with two saves in his third win of the season, while Joe
Keene (Bistol, N.H.) stopped seven shots in the loss.
Nichols (3-1) opens The Commonwealth Coast Conference play at Gordon College
Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Daniel Webster (0-2) hosts St. Joseph’s (Maine) on
Thursday, September 18, at 4 p.m.
