St. Joseph's Holds Off Eagles, 2-0

Nashua --  The Saint Joseph’s (Maine) men’s soccer team rode the foot of Doug MacCallum (Hingham, Mass.), who notched two late second half scores, to a 2-0 shutout victory over host Daniel Webster College at Eagle Field Thursday afternoon.

MacCullum tipped in his own rebound in the 71st minute and followed with a header off a Kevin Melega (Easthampton, Mass.) cross pass in the 80th to give the Monks (2-3-1) their third straight victory, while the Eagles (0-3) remained winless on the early campaign.

The contest was tightly played throughout as the Eagles finished with a 15-11 total shots advantage including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Monk goalkeeper Will Pike was equal to the task however, registering 10 saves to record the victory.

Eagle starting goalkeeper Joe Keene (Bristol, N.H.) gave way to Fred Jacobs (Wrentham, Mass.) in the second half. Jacobs finished with five stops.

The Eagles saw strong play up front from newcomer Alex Jackson (Kent. Ohio), Andrew Donovan (Milford, N.H.) and Michael Lohr (Chepachet, R.I.), who combined for seven shots on goal.

The Eagles return to action Saturday as they travel to Southern Vermont College for a 2:30 p.m. New England Collegiate Conference matchup. Saint Joseph’s visits Norwich in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
