Eagles Stop Newbury 2-1, Tie Record and Clinch Playoff Berth
Brookline, Mass. -- Spencer Bernard and Alex Jackson notched first half
goals that stood up as the Daniel Webster Men's Soccer team topped host
Newbury, 2-1 Saturday in an NECC matchup.
The win was a double dose of success for the Eagles, as the squad moved to
8-6 overall (3-1 NECC), tying the all time program record for wins in a
season, and clinched a berth in the NECC championship tournament, its first
appearance in a postseason tournament since 2003 and third all time.
Newbury's William Maddock (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) scored off an assist
by Andy Osei (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) just 1:02 into the contest, but the
lead would not be held for
long, however, as Bernard (Windsor Locks, CT/Windsor Locks) found the back
of the net at 4:15 for an unassisted goal. Both teams threatened with
offensive attacks many times throughout the first half but only the Eagles
would capitalize, scoring the last goal of the game at 19:17 as Bernard
found Jackson (Kent, OH/Theodore Roosevelt) putting Daniel Webster up 2-1.
The Nighthawk (3-14) defense was led by Timothy Chatigny (Pelham,
MA/Franklin Country Technical) and Nicholas Sehovich (Pelham, NH/Pelham) who
haulted many Eagle attacks. Freshman William McNally (Grafton, MA/Marian)
played well for Newbury in net, registering 8 saves on the afternoon.
