Becker Nips Eagles With Late Goal, 1-0
Nashua – Dircilino DeBrito (New Bedford, Mass.) notched a the eventual
game-winning goal off a Snjezan Telebak (Southington, Conn.) pass with 8:56
remaining in regulation and the Becker College men’s soccer team held on for
a tight 1-0 victory over host Daniel Webster College in a New England
Collegiate Conference matchup before over 200 Family Weekend patrons
Saturday.
The win pushed the Hawks (9-7-1, 4-2 NECC) into second place in the
conference standings, and pushed the Eagles (8-7, 3-2 NECC) into third with
one game remaining on the schedule for their regular season schedule. The
Eagles can finish no higher than third and will travel to either Becker or
regular season champion Mitchell Thursday in the NECC semifinal round.
The loss was a frustrating one for Daniel Webster, as the Eagles controlled
most of the tempo throughout the contest, holding possession in the Hawks
defensive side of the field for more than half the game. The Eagles finished
with a 14-8 total shots advantage and a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Becker goalkeeper Aaron Fill made six saves in goal, while Eagle net minder
Joe Keene (Bristol, N.H.) made four stops.
The Eagles saw two strong opportunities midway through the second half, both
coming off the foot of rookie Alex Jackson (Kent, Ohio). Jackson took a feed
from Mike Lohr (Chepachet, R.I.) with 28 minutes remaining, pulled Fill out
of position at a deep left angle and just missed the opposite corner. Three
minutes later, Mike Madonia (Pittsford, N.Y.) found Jackson inside the box
and Jackson rifled a 10-yarder, but Fill made a nifty diving stop to
preserve the scoreless tie.
Daniel Webster closes out its regular season Monday at 3:30 p.m. hosting
Lesley University.
