Newbury Shuts Out DWC, 4-0

Sophomore forward John Mawson (Amherst, Mass.) erupted for all four goals and Leonard Kavaja (Revere, Mass.) added two assists to lead Newbury past host Daniel Webster, 4-0 in men’s soccer Monday.

The win halted a two game losing streak for the Nighthawks (4-9-1), while the Eagles remained winless (0-13).

Mawson struck twice in the first half, heading home a Nicholas Sehovich (Pelham, N.H.) cross pass at the 29:09 mark and added a 20-foot blast to the right corner at the 34 minute mark for a 2-0 lead at the break.

Mawson notched the hat trick 1:46 into the second frame set up by Kavaja and completed the quartet at the 67:28 mark taking a feed from Anthony Lufkin (Bloomington, Minn.).

The Nighthawks finished with a 20-6 shots advantage. Brian Picanco (Lowell, Mass.) made two saves for Newbury, while Craig Van Tuyl (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished with eight Eagle stops.

The Eagles close out a six game home stand and play their final regular season home game Wednesday against Becker at 3:30 p.m. Newbury hosts Southern Vermont Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
