- Courtesy Johnson & Wales Sports
Information -
The Johnson & Wales men’s soccer team captured the Great Northeast Athletic
Conference regular season championship with a 7-0 victory against Daniel
Webster at Pierce Stadium on Saturday evening. The game was the last regular
season home game for seniors Chris Nye (Hubbardstown, Mass.), Vinny Massaro
(Woodbridge, Conn.) and Brenton Blanchard (Saline, Mich.).
Johnson & Wales scored what would prove to be the only goal they would need
when junior Alin Oriszi (Ypsilanti, Mich.) tallied the game-winner at the
38:57 mark of the first half. The Wildcats took the 1-0 lead into the locker
room at halftime.
JWU struck again early in the second half when a goal by Nye gave the team a
2-0 advantage at 47:43. The team wasted little time getting on the board
again when junior Barry Phillips (West Glover, Vt.) put the team ahead 3-0
at 49:45. Back-to-back goals by freshman Paul Dyer, first at 64:02 and then
at 65:57 extended the lead to 5-0. The Wildcats then cruised to the 7-0 win
after freshman Dennis Gold (Lakewood, Ohio) and Blanchard capped off the
scoring for the evening.
Blanchard had one save in the win for Johnson & Wales and also played the
final 20 minutes of the game in the field, scoring his first goal of the
season. Junior Craig Van Tuyl (Buffalo, N.Y.)made 10 stops in the setback
for Daniel Webster.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 12-4 overall and 7-0 in the GNAC
while Daniel Webster drops to 1-14 on the season, 0-7 in league play. The
Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, October 25th when they travel
to Suffolk for a GNAC contest at 6:00 p.m.
