Eagles Split Season Opener With CSJ

(Nashua) - Sarah Mason (May Landing, N.J.) went 2-for4 knocking in three runs and Erin Hurd (Centerville, Mass.) added two hits and knocked in one as the Daniel Webster softball team nipped Saint Joseph (Vt.) 8-6 in the nightcap of a season opening doubleheader at DWC late Wednesday.

The win salvaged a split after the visiting Saints (1-1) took a 3-2 game one victory.

The Eagles (1-1) terrorized the base paths, setting a program record with 12 stolen bases on 13 attempts over the two games.

Hurd and Jessica Carter (Martinsburg, W.V.) each scored two runs in the nightcap as the Eagles (1-1) took control with four runs in the bottom of the first keyed by a run scoring singles from Mason and Erin Moseley (Sterling, Mass.).

A two runs single from Mason in the fourth gave the Eagles a 6-1 lead.

Melissa Pike (Gorham, N.H.) paced the Saints with two hits and a RBI.

Mason (1-0) earned the win on the mound allowing one earned run on three hits over four innings, striking out three and walking two. Moseley picked up her first save allowing two runs on two hits over two innings.

In the opener, the Saints took advantage of two Eagle errors to plate three unearned runs in the top of the first and held on for the 3-2 win. Michelle Petty (Pawlet, Vt.), Maria Filiberto (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and Irene Tompkins (Schenectady, N.Y.) all had one hit and scored in the first.

The Eagles scored twice in the fourth taking advantage of two Saint errors and an RBI single from Breanne DeMarco (Grand Island, N.Y.). The Eagles rallied in the seventh as Carter, who went 3-for-4 notched a two-out single and stole second, but Saints pitcher Melissa Pike got Hurd on a tight third strike to preserve the win.

Stephanie Zubricki (Brookline, N.H.) added two hits for the Eagles.

Pike (1-0) earned the win allowing both runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out nine and walking two.

Moseley (0-1) took the tough-luck loss, allowing three runs (none earned), striking out eight and walking one.

The Eagles open their Great Northeast Athletic Conference schedule Saturday as they travel to Saint Joseph’s (Conn.) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
