Eagles Shock Norwich In Opener, Gain Split

Nashua – In one of the bigger upsets in recent Daniel Webster softball history, the Eagles stunned Norwich 3-1 in the opener of a GNAC doubleheader Saturday at Eagles Field, before the Cadets rebounded for a 9-0 victory in game two.

The Eagles (2-10, 1-9 GNAC) surprised a favored Cadet squad (14-6, 9-3 GNAC) that came into the doubleheader winners of 10 of their previous 12, while the Eagles had dropped eight straight.

In the opener, Erin Moseley (Sterling, Mass.) scattered four hits over seven innings allowing one unearned run, striking out eight and walking one to improve to 2-3, while helping her own cause with two hits including a double and an RBI single in the first.

Moseley’s single in the opening inning scored Erin Hurd (Centerville, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead. Sarah Mason (May Landing, N.J.) added an RBI ground out scoring Jessica Carter (Martinsburg, W.V.) in the third.

A Codi Collins (Waterbury, Vt.) RBI single scored Katie Menard in the top of the fifth, but Hurd followed with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame, scoring Carter for the 3-1 final.

Katie Manard (Wolcott, Vt.) took the loss (9-4), allowing all three runs on six hits, striking out one.

In the nightcap, Justine Caron (Lowell, Mass.) tossed a sharp one-hitter, striking out two in improving to 4-2.

Whitney Grennon (Franklin, Vt.) led the Cadets with three hits and three RBI, while Collins, Jazmin Stevens (Colebrook, N.H.) and Emily Bean (Northfield, Vt.) added two hits and knocked in a run each.

The Cadets banged out 14 hits, taking advantage of five Eagle errors that led to six unearned runs. Bean notched an RBI single in the fourth as Norwich plated two for a 2-0 edge. Norwich scored five times in the seventh keyed by two errors and a two-run single from Grennon.

Back-to-back RBI singles from Stevens and Grennon in the sixth closed out the scoring.

Mason took the loss (1-8) allowing seven runs (one earned), striking out two and walking one.

Weather permitting, the Eagles return to action Sunday as they visit Western New England for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. Norwich travels to Johnson & Wales Sunday for a noon doubleheader.
