Westfield Comes Back To Tip Eagles, 74-71

Nashua – Katie Sylvain (Hadley, Mass.) knocked down 22 points with 15 coming in the second half and Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, Mass.) added 18 points and 11 rebounds guiding Westfield State to a 74-71 come-from-behind women’s basketball victory over host Daniel Webster Tuesday night.

Sylvain buried three three pointers and Krista Corriveau (Plainville, Conn.) knocked down four treys as part of a 13-point night as the Owls (6-11) halted a five-game slide, rallying from a 12-point halftime deficit.

Erin Moseley (Sterling, Mass.) led the Eagles (9-8) with 22 points while Joyce Chagan (Boothbay, Maine) added 12 and Sara Shea (Quincy, Mass.) chipped in with 10.

It was a tale of two dramatically different halves. Daniel Webster came out clicking on all cylinders keyed by 53% shooting from the field. The Eagles opened with an 8-3 run and took control with a 13-3 run to end the half keyed by three jumpers from Moseley. Westfield meanwhile, struggled from the floor hitting just 22%.

But Westfield heated up the in the second, knocking down 52% from the field and took advantage as the Eagles cooled off to hit just 33%.

A Shea three pointer built the DWC lead to 15 in the opening seconds of the second half and the Eagles led by 10 at 53-43 with 9:57 left after two free throws from Moseley.

But Westfield answered with a quick flurry of threes with two coming from Corriveau, another from Katie Sylvain to cut the lead to 55-54 with 6:49 left, and Peggy Steuerwald (Lenox, Mass.) added another from downtown with 5:54 left to give the Owls their first lead since a minute and a half into the contest.

Corriveau knocked down another trey for a 60-57 lead and Shea answered from outside to tie it with 4:23 left.

But Corriveau followed with a free throw, and Wasuk added a layup for a three-point edge with three minutes left. A Sylvain layup with 1:05 left made it a five point game and the Eagles pulled no closer.

The Eagles will return to action Thursday as they visit GNAC foe Simmons at 7:00 p.m. Westfield travels to Framingham State Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. MASCAC contest.
