Eagles Keep Pride Intact, 65-64
Box Score
Briana DeSeignora (Medfield, Mass.) and Erin Moseley (Sterling, Mass.)
notched 14 points each and Sarah Shea (Quincy, Mass.) added 13 as Daniel
Webster outlasted Regis College, 65-64 Thursday night at Vagge Gymnasium.
Ashley Boyd (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with seven points, eight rebounds and
three blocks and Nicole Conley (Hinesburg, Vt.) added eight points as the
Eagles moved to 2-1 on the early season.
Kimberly Mariotti (Springfield, Mass.) knocked down a game high 22 points
with 10 rebounds for the visiting Pride (1-4), while Jessica Page (Quincy,
Mass.) added 14 points and 12 boards and Laura Sears (Billerica, Mass.)
added 16 points and four assists.
The game was tight throughout with neither team ever leading by more than
nine. The game saw 17 lead changes and eight ties including a 33-33 deadlock
at the half.
Ahead 41-40 with 17:25 to play, the Eagles looked to take command using an
8-0 run over 5:04 keyed by two baskets from Moseley and field goals from
DeSeignora and Boyd for a 49-40 lead with 12:21 left.
But Regis stormed back with a 12-1 run over the next 4:18 as Mariotti buried
three straight field goals including a go-ahead jumper for a 52-51 lead with
7:30 to play.
A Page three pointer put Regis up 62-58 with 4:23 to go, but Nicole Conley
answered with a huge trey 14 seconds later and back-to-back Shea layups with
2:56 and 22 seconds left put the hosts back in front for good.
Regis hurt its own cause missing its final seven shots from the field and
went scoreless until Sears converted a layup with eight ticks left. After a
Boyd miss at the line with four seconds to go, Regis had one last chance for
the win, but a Mariotti jumper in the lane as time expired fell short.
Despite being rebounded 47-36 including an overwhelming 18-6 advantage on
the offensive glass, the Eagles vastly improved their turnovers, committing
just 15, down from 29 in last Tuesday’s win at Eastern Nazarene.
The Eagles head to Lyndonville, Vt. this weekend for the Lyndon State Lady
Hornet Tournament. DWC faces Worcester State Saturday 3:00 p.m. with the
championship and consolation slated for Sunday.
