Eagles Work Overtime But Fall to Pilgrims, 71-70
Box Score
Porsha Cauley’s (New Haven, Conn.) layup with seven seconds remaining in
overtime capped a game high 25-point performance as New England College
nipped host Daniel Webster, 71-70 in a non-conference matchup Thursday
night.
Cauley finished 8 of 11 from the floor, was 9 of 13 from the line and added
five steals as the Pilgrims evened their record at 3-3.
LaShawnda Wilson (Burlington, Vt.) and Ashley Hutton (Lebanon, N.H.) added
17 points each for NEC.
Erin Moseley (Sterling, Mass.) led the Eagles (3-3) with 23 points, while
Danielle Marie Carkin (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and
Nicole Conley (Hinesburg, Vt.) added 10 points.
Tied at 59 at the end of regulation, DWC pulled ahead in overtime and led
68-65 with 2:07 to play, but a Hutton jumper and Wilson layup put the
Pilgrims ahead with 1:05 left. The Eagles took their final lead on another
Carkin jumper with 31 seconds to go, setting up Cauley’s heroics.
The Eagles held as much as a 13-point lead in the first half and led 21-8
with 4:33 to play, but NEC finished with an 18-5 run over the final 4:33 to
tie the game at 26 at the half.
The Pilgrims controlled much of the second half, leading by as many as six
including a 52-46 lead with 5:05 to play in regulation. But the Eagles
slowly climbed back in thanks to a 10-3 keyed by two buckets from Carkin and
field goals from Conley and Emily Coole. Another Carkin jumper put the hosts
back ahead, 56-55 with 2:13 left.
A Moseley layup gave DWC a 58-56 lead with 1:06 to go and the teams traded
individual free throws for a 59-57 game with 10 seconds left, when Wilson
drew a foul in the paint and sank both to force overtime.
The Eagles finished 46% from the field on the night, but committed 24
turnovers, leading to 23 Pilgrim points. NEC also finished with 19 second
chance points to the Eagles’ 10, despite being outrebounded, 40-33, largely
due to 17 offensive boards.
The Eagles host Newbury Saturday 1:00 p.m.
