left to seal the victory. |
Sarah Shea (Quincy, Mass.) erupted for a season high 26 points, hitting 9 of
14 from the field and pulled down 13 rebounds as Daniel Webster nipped
upset-minded Newbury 65-62 Saturday at Vagge Gymnasium.
Shea added five assists and was 6 of 7 from the line as the Eagles (4-3)
kept the Nighthawks (0-8) winless.
Ashley Boyd (Hanson, Mass.) added a double double of 12 points and 12
rebounds added two blocks while Erin Moseley (Sterling, Mass.) chipped in
with 11 points and seven boards.
Rashawna Wynn (Baltimore, Md.) led the Nighthawks with 21 points and four
assists, while Jessica Lightfoot notched 15 and Jessie Laliberty (Haverhill,
Mass.) added a double of 11 points and 11 boards. Taraja Laws (Easton,
Penn.) added seven points and a game best 17 rebounds.
Newbury fell behind 9-7 in the early going, but forged ahead by as many as
eight points thanks in large part to four first half treys from Lightfoot.
Shea meanwhile, helped keep the game close knocking down 16 in the opening
frame going 7 of 9 from the floor and the Nighthawks led 36-31 at the break.
The Eagles went stone cold from the field in the early minutes of the second
half, missing their first six shots while jumpers from Laliberty and
Jeanellys Susana helped built a 12-point lead at 43-31.
Trailing by eight at 48-40 with 11:45 to go, the Eagles finally began to
convert. A Jenny Ozug three point play made it 48-43 with 10:51 left,
sparking an 11-2 run over the next two and a half minutes as Shea converted
three straight foul shots to make it a 52-51 game with 7:31 left.
Another Shea layup with 2:24 left cut the Newbury lead to 60-59 and Danielle
Marie Carkin finally gave the Eagles the lead grabbing the rebound of a Boyd
miss with 1:49 to go.
Two free throws from Wynn put Newbury back up by one with 1:40 left, but a
huge jumper from Boyd in the lane with 1:23 left put the Eagles up 63-62.
The teams traded misses and Lightfoot misfired on a three with 22 seconds
left and Shea, fouled off the rebound, coolly sank two from the line to seal
the win with 17 seconds left.
The Eagles finished 35% from the field and vastly improved their turnover
rate, committing just 15 and finished with a 49-41 rebound advantage
including 18 on the offensive glass.
DWC is now off for the next 25 days. They return to action Thursday, January
4th in Nassau, Bahamas where they will face Skidmore College in the annual
