DiSantis Helps Daniel Webster Tip Wheelock, 2-1
- Eagles Clinch First Round Home Playoff With Victory -
Nashua – Freshman midfielder Theresa DiSantis (Hinsdale, Mass.) notched the
eventual game winning goal late in the first half and set up the first score guiding
the Daniel Webster College women’s soccer team past Wheelock College, 2-1 in
a New England Collegiate Conference matchup Wednesday afternoon at a chilled
Eagle Field.
The Eagles tied the all time program record for victories in a season with
their seventh as they moved to 7-7 overall and 5-2 in NECC play. The 2002
Eagles squad posted a 7-12 overall mark.
The win also guaranteed the Eagles can finish no lower than fourth in the
conference standings and clinched a first round home quarterfinal game to be played next Wednesday, October 29th against a yet-to-be
determined opponent. The quarterfinal will mark just the second ever playoff game
in the program's history (first since 2002) and the first time the Eagles will have ever hosted
one.
The Eagles jumped ahead just 3:26 into the contest when junior forward Erin
Hurd (Centerville, Mass.) headed home a DiSantis corner kick for a 1-0 lead.
Wheelock (3-11-1, 2-5-1 NECC) tied it at the 20:05 mark on a Lindsey
Lacourse (Scarborough, Maine) 15-yarder that beat Eagles keeper Amy Waller
(Berlin, Mass.) to the left side.
But DiSantis answered with 1:51 remaining in the half launching a
30-yard bomb from the left side of the field that hooked right and just
caught the inside of the net past Wildcat keeper Victoria Fernandes
(Randolph, Mass.) for the eventual gamer.
Daniel Webster finished with an 8-3 total shots advantage, but just a 4-2
advantage on goal as both teams put forth strong defensive efforts.
Waller finished with one save for the Eagles. Fernandes made two stops for
Wheelock.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they travel to Becker College in
their NECC regular season finale beginning at 1:00 p.m. Wheelock hosts Lasell
Saturday at Noon.
