Personal and Residential Hall Safety

Safety at DWC is the responsibility of everyone at the college.  In order to maximize this, students must take steps to reduce their chances of becoming a victim.  The following list should serve as a guideline to students, faculty, and staff members to help achieve this goal.

  1. Whenever a student leaves their room, always ensure that it has been locked.  Even if leaving to travel down the hall to use the restroom facilities.  It only takes a few seconds for someone to enter.
  2. Never leave valuables in plain view.  Always find a secure place to put them and do not tell anyone including roommates.
  3. Register all expensive valuables with Campus Safety as part of their OPERATION ID program.
  4. Do not lend out room keys to anyone including close friends.
  5. Immediately report all unknown or suspicious persons to Campus Safety for investigation.  Never give access to unknown persons to resident halls or rooms.
  6. Try not to walk alone at night or in unlighted areas.  Always try to be in the company of another such as a friend.
  7. When leaving your room for another destination on campus, call ahead to let them know you are leaving.
  8. Always lock up bikes in approved bike rooms or to designated bike racks.
  9. When living in first floor rooms, never leave windows unlatched or unlocked when leaving.
  10. Never prop exterior resident hall doors as it compromises the safety of everyone by leaving the building unsecured.  Some halls have propped door alarms and will sound an audible alarm.

To report a crime or incident

Campus Safety wants and needs your assistance in crime prevention.  We ask you to look out for each others welfare, to be alert to anything that threatens the quality of campus life, and to report all suspicious activities, emergencies, and other concerns to the department.  Reports can be made anonymously. Persons reporting incidents should take special care to note the following information so that it may be provided to the Campus Safety officer as he/she is being dispatched to the incident:

  1. Name of person(s) involved
  2. What is the exact problem or nature of the incident
  3. How many people are involved
  4. Clothing descriptions
  5. Last direction of travel if applicable
  6. If anyone is injured and if medical care is required

The faster and more frequently incidents are reported to Campus Safety, the more efficient and effective the department can be in ensuring that the campus is as safe as it can be.
