Individual counseling sessions
College life is exciting, although some experiences are difficult to handle. Professional, caring counselors are available at the Counseling office in the Student Success Center located on the first floor of the Library. They can help you sort through your problems and find a way to resolve them. The service is confidential, so no one will know about your session unless you choose to tell them.

Common concerns include:

  • I feel depressed/homesick/confused.
  • My boyfriend (or girlfriend) and I aren't getting along.
  • I freeze when I take a test.
  • I have trouble being assertive.
  • Academics are a struggle for me.

The center provides counseling for problems that can be resolved quickly. Sometimes, when students have problems that are more serious, the counseling staff will help find the best community resource for them.

Academic Help
Individual sessions are available for students, many of whom have difficulty with time management, study skills and organization. Meeting with an academic coach can help you develop a plan and practice new skills that will enable you to succeed.
If you would like to talk with a counselor, call the Counseling office at 577-6041. Depending on your schedule, appointments are usually available within a couple days. If you have a serious problem and need to be seen right away, counselors are available.

Confidentiality
Counseling records are kept separate from academic, disciplinary and medical records to ensure each student's privacy and confidentiality. No information is released without the knowledge and written consent of the student, except for those rare instances where counselors are required by law to reveal particular information. In an emergency, where students demonstrate a high probability of harming themselves or others, the staff might be required to release information to ensure safety.

In an emergency when the Counseling Office is not open, students in residence halls should contact their residence director or call Campus Safety at 577-6300. In an obvious emergency, call 911.
