Scope: James Baldwin was an African American author whose works dealt with the three major subject areas of “African Americans fighting racial discrimination, gay men searching for love and respect, and artists struggling to express meaning and beauty.” (Gelfant, The Columbia Companion to the Twentieth Century Short Story) His stories are reminiscent of his own life experiences growing up in Harlem in the 1920’s. In 1965 he published his only collection of short stories entitled “ Going to meet the Man.” These short stories greatly influenced generations of both Black and White Americans to come.
