SCOPE: Behavior is often determined by the positive or negative reinforcements one receives as a result of that particular behavior. Treatment of behavior begins with an analysis of what stimuli trigger the problem behavior, and what consequences follow from that behavior. (Colman, Companion Encyclopedia of Psychology) Various types of behavior modification have developed over the years that have been successful in modifying undesirable behaviors. Some of these therapies include cognitive behavior modification, cognitive therapy, rational-emotive therapy, and gestalt therapy.
