SCOPE: Bertolt Brecht was a controversial German playwright whose works criticized the political and social conventions of his day. In 1929, Brecht joined the Communist Party, and his political affiliations were voiced in his writings to such an extent that his works were banned and he was forced into exile. (Diamond, Encyclopedia of World Writers) He is still regarded as one of the more influential writers of the 20th century.
