SCOPE: Albert Camus was a French novelist, essayist, and playwright born in Algeria. His experiences in World War II as well as his childhood experiences with poverty, prompted him to write works that focused on the theme of moral responsibility and dignity in the face of dire circumstances.(Diamond, Encyclopedia of World Writers) In 1957 Camus was awarded the Nobel prize for literature. His works served as a vehicle for social change.
