Pathfinder: Emotional Intelligence

Scope: The term “emotional intelligence” was coined in 1990 by Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer. It may be defined as a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor the feelings and emotions of oneself and of other people, to discriminate among the various feelings and emotions, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions. (Levinson, Encyclopedia of Human Emotions)
Emotional intelligence involves four areas which include 1) the ability to perceive, appraise, and express emotion accurately 2) the ability to access and generate feelings when they facilitate cognition 3) the ability to understand affect-laden information and make use of emotional knowledge 4) the ability to regulate emotions to promote growth and well-being
The purpose of this pathfinder is to serve as a guideline for student research. It is not intended as a comprehensive listing of all the resources in the library, but as a selective sampling of the many types of materials available on this topic.
